Dr. Eunice Muringo Kiereini

Born in Kerugoya in 1938, Dr. Kiereini trained as a nurse in Southampton and specialised in midwifery in Edinburgh. She returned to Kenya to help build the systems that care for mothers, children and communities.

As Chief Nursing Officer of Kenya from 1968 to 1985, she strengthened nursing education, professional regulation and community health. In 1981, she became the first African and the first nurse from the developing world elected President of the International Council of Nurses.

Her honours include Chief, Elder and Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear. The Foundation carries her commitment to practical care forward through health, education, water and sanitation.
